What happens if you fail the US citizenship test

Failing the US citizenship test feels like the floor dropping out. It is also more common, and more recoverable, than most people admit the night before their interview.

You usually get a second chance

If you fail the civics test, the English test, or both, USCIS generally schedules a second interview between 60 and 90 days later. You retake only the portion you failed. If you passed English but missed civics, you do not start over on English.

If you fail the second time, USCIS will deny the N-400. You can file a new application later (and pay again). That is expensive and slow. The point of a second chance is to use it.

What "fail" actually means on civics

The officer asks up to 10 of the 100 civics questions. You need 6 correct. It is oral, not multiple choice. Close answers that miss the official wording can be marked wrong. That is why practicing the accepted phrases, not just "the general idea", matters.

The 60–90 days in between

This is the window people waste by spiraling. A better plan:

1. Write down every question you remember from the first interview.
2. Practice those categories first (government, history, or civics).
3. Say answers out loud. The second interview is still oral.
4. Update current-official answers (president, your senators, your governor). These change after elections.

The civics test is a high-stakes oral exam in a government office, often in a second language. Anxiety is not evidence that you "don't deserve" citizenship. It is evidence you care. Prepare for the retake the same way you should have prepared the first time: the 800+ question bank, out loud, until 6 out of 10 feels conservative.
