2008 vs 2025 civics test: what's different

USCIS has more than one civics test version in circulation. Here is how the 2008 100-question test compares to newer versions, and which one you should study.

Search "US citizenship test 2025" and you will see two different stories: people studying 100 questions, and people talking about a newer, harder civics test. Both can be true, depending on when you filed and which version USCIS assigned.

The 2008 civics test (100 questions)

This is the version most applicants still mean when they say "the citizenship test":

  • 100 civics questions
  • Officer asks up to 10
  • You need 6 correct
  • Oral
  • Some answers change after elections

What people mean by a "2025" test

USCIS has revised civics testing before (notably a 2020 version that was later rolled back for most applicants). Headlines about a 2025 test usually refer to policy changes, a new question set for some filers, or updated current-official answers, not a secret third exam you should guess at.

Rules of thumb:

  • Do not mix banks. Studying 128 questions from a 2020 PDF plus 100 from 2008 is how people memorize the wrong list.
  • Check your interview notice and uscis.gov. If USCIS tells you which version you will be asked, that wins over a blog post (including this one).
  • Current officials still change on every version: president, vice president, speaker, your senators, your governor.

What does not change

The interview is still a conversation. You still need spoken answers. You still need to know your state. And you still should not walk in having only read a list silently on your phone.
